| members Howard Read I am a senior lecturer in Visual Communication at the University of Wolverhampton and also an associate lecturer at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London. I studied at Chelsea School of Art where I received my BA (Hons) in Fine Art Painting and an MA at the Royal College of Art in Illustration. As an Illustrator I have worked on editorial and book commissions for a broad range of clients, including The Guardian, The Financial Times, The Sunday Times and The Independent. In the last four years I have been focusing my self initiated drawing practice on the subject of the urban environment. I currently live close to Elephant and Castle in South London, which is undergoing huge regeneration, changing the demographic and physical profile of the area. I am interested in the identity of place and the process of transformation, the effect that this has on people particularly in terms of their sense of identity and belonging. The immediacy of drawing on location in sketchbooks and then working these drawings and sketches up in the studio with photographic reference is how I make work, trying to capture and record the identity of people, place and the city in flux. I am interested in the following themes: the identity of place beyond the geographical space, the process of transformation and the effect that this has on people particularly in terms of their sense of identity and belonging. Images The Drawings shown here were commissioned by AHMM architects to document the development and transformation of the Angel building, Islington London. Client: Derwent. The work was completed over 2010/11. The building was a former BT exchange - the drawings focused on the construction of the atrium and creation of open plan office space with dramatic interior and exterior views.
