Café Royal Books
Drawing, illustration, photography and publishing are the four elements
of Craigs practice. Publishing being the place where research crosses
his practice. Since 2006 he has been running Café
Royal Books. Craig is currently a lecturer
in Fine Art, Drawing, Image Making and Illustration at the University
of Central Lancashire.
CRB make short run artists books and was founded in 2006 by Craig
Atkinson. Café Royal Books
offers artists a blank space within which to work. The publications
are a testing ground for ideas that would perhaps otherwise not be
published; or can be used as a space to display work in a new context,
potentially for a new audience. Craig often publishes work that develops
new ways of thinking about existing material or language. He is very
much interested in change and documenting that change, whatever it
might be. Currently Craig is working on a series of publications which
examine Britain and Britishness. from various aspects, CRB publish
between 15 ad 50 titles annually, as editions of 50 - 200.
Café Royal Books
titles are available to buy world-wide and are collected by many major
international museums and galleries including Tate, MoMA, and the
V&A. All of CRB books are designed, edited, printed and published
in the UK.
Craig also runs an annual project. The 2013 Project consisted of an
exhibition of Books, photographs, and drawings from over 20 countries,
all sharing common themes of communication and dissemination.
To mark the event CRB published a series of books: Words, Drawings,
Photographs, and Publications. These titles were launched at the preview
event. Words is a collection of essays by leading practitioners and
researchers including Sarah Bodman,
Jorg Colberg and
'In terms of drawing I suppose I'm more of a publisher than maker
- it used to be the other way round. I take more photographs now.'
